Watch terminology defined in SBWC voice. No collector fluff. What matters operationally and why.
Antimagnetic
A watch that resists the effects of magnetic fields on its movement. Important for operators near communications equipment or explosive ordnance. IEC 764 standard specifies resistance up to 4,800 A/m.
Automatic Movement
A self-winding mechanical movement powered by the motion of the wearer's wrist via a rotor. Requires no battery and no manual winding as long as worn regularly. Also called "self-winding." Compare: Manual Wind, Quartz.
B-Uhr (Beobachtungsuhr)
German for "observation watch." WWII-era Luftwaffe pilot watches produced to strict specifications — large (55mm+), high-contrast dial, inner rotating bezel, hack seconds. Produced by IWC, Lange, Laco, Stowa, Wempe. Laco still produces direct lineage pieces.
Bezel (Unidirectional Rotating)
A bezel that only rotates counter-clockwise. Safety feature on dive watches — if accidentally moved, it can only underestimate remaining dive time (never overestimate). Required for ISO 6425 certification.
BGW9
A high-performance grade of Superluminova lume material. Used on premium dive and field watches. One of the brighter available formulations — strong initial glow and reasonable retention.
Caseback Exhibition
A sapphire crystal on the caseback allowing visibility of the movement. Reduces water resistance slightly and adds no operational value. Collector feature, not a field feature.
Chronograph
A watch with a stopwatch function — typically operated by pushers at 2 and 4 o'clock. Start/stop/reset. The subdials display elapsed hours, minutes, and seconds. For tactical use, a flyback chronograph (single pusher resets and restarts) is operationally faster.
COSC Certified
Contrôle Officiel Suisse des Chronomètres. Swiss certification body for movement accuracy. COSC-certified movements must achieve -4/+6 seconds per day accuracy. A baseline quality benchmark, not a guarantee of field reliability.
Crown
The winding/setting knob on the side of the case. Screw-down crowns improve water resistance significantly vs. push-pull crowns. On a dive watch, a screw-down crown at 3 is standard.
Dead-Beat Seconds
A complication where the seconds hand jumps in one-second increments rather than sweeping. Easier to use for precise time measurement. Found on some vintage military field watches.
Dual Time / GMT
A watch displaying two time zones simultaneously. A true GMT complication adds a 24-hour hand independently settable from the hour hand. Operationally useful for Zulu/local time tracking.
ETA Movement
ETA SA is a Swiss movement manufacturer (owned by Swatch Group). The ETA 2824-2 (automatic) and ETA 6497 (manual wind) are among the most widely used base movements in field watches globally. Highly serviceable.
Eco-Drive
Citizen's solar-powered movement technology. Light-powered via a photovoltaic cell beneath the dial. Charge reserve of several months in darkness. Zero battery replacements.
Field Watch
A category of watch designed for land-based military and outdoor use. Characteristics: legible Arabic numeral dial, hack seconds, manual or automatic movement, durable case, usually 38-44mm. Originated with WWI/WWII military contracts.
Flyback Chronograph
An advanced chronograph where a single push of the reset pusher stops, resets, and restarts timing simultaneously. Faster to operate than a standard chronograph. Military origin — aerial navigation.
G10
British MoD designation for government-issue quartz watches, first issued in 1980. CWC received the first MoD G10 contract. Also used colloquially to describe any simple black nylon strap (G10 strap).
GMT
Greenwich Mean Time. Also refers to a watch with a GMT complication — a second time zone display. The GMT hand typically completes one rotation per 24 hours and reads against a 24-hour bezel or ring.
Hack Feature
The ability to stop the seconds hand by pulling the crown to the time-setting position. Allows synchronization of multiple watches to an exact second. Standard on most modern watches; essential on military field watches.
Helium Escape Valve
A valve on dive watches used for saturation diving — releases helium that penetrates the case during extended deep dives. Not relevant for combat dive operations, which are far shallower than saturation dive depths.
ISO 6425
International standard for dive watches. Requirements include: water resistance at 125% of stated depth for 10 minutes, unidirectional bezel, legibility at 25cm in darkness, anti-magnetic resistance, shock resistance, and more. If a watch is "ISO 6425 certified," it actually passed testing — not just rated.
In-House Movement
A movement manufactured by the watch brand itself, not sourced from ETA or another supplier. Not inherently better — some in-house movements are less serviceable than ETA-based alternatives.
Lume / Luminescence
The glow-in-the-dark material applied to hands and indices. Modern options: Superluminova (charges in light, glows in dark), Tritium (radioactive, always-on, 10-12 year half-life), and LumiNova variants. Tritium is operationally superior for no-charge situations.
Manual Wind Movement
A mechanical movement that requires manual winding via the crown, typically daily. No battery dependency. On a field watch, manual wind means you always know your power reserve.
Mil-Sub (Rolex 5513/5517)
Rolex Submariner watches issued to UK MoD in the 1970s. The 5517 was MoD spec with a non-hack movement and special engravings. Replaced by CWC divers in 1980. Now extremely collectible.
Movement
The mechanism inside a watch that powers it and measures time. Three primary types: Quartz (battery/solar), Automatic (self-winding mechanical), Manual Wind (hand-wound mechanical).
NATO Strap
A single-piece nylon strap that threads through the spring bars. If a spring bar fails, the watch stays on the wrist. Originally British MoD specification (G10). 18mm, 20mm, and 22mm are common widths.
Power Reserve
The amount of time a mechanical watch can run when fully wound without additional winding or wrist movement. Standard automatics: 38-50 hours. Some field watches achieve 80-100 hours.
Quartz Movement
Battery or solar powered. A quartz crystal oscillates at 32,768 Hz when electricity passes through it. Accuracy typically ±15 seconds per month — far more accurate than most mechanical movements. Atomic-synced quartz is accurate to the second.
Sapphire Crystal
The hardest watch glass material (9 on Mohs scale, behind diamond at 10). Highly scratch resistant. Anti-reflective coatings on one or both sides reduce glare. Standard on watches above ~$400. Mineral crystal scratches far more easily.
Superluminova
The industry-standard photoluminescent lume. Charges under light (UV and white light), glows in darkness. Grades: C1 (standard), BGW9 (blue-tint, high output), C3 (yellow-green, strongest). Fades over hours — compare to tritium (always-on).
Tritium (T<25)
Radioactive lume. H3 (tritium) excites phosphor to glow continuously without any charging. "T<25" means the radioactive content is under 25 millicuries — below threshold requiring safety labeling in most countries. Glows at constant level 24/7. Half-life ~12.3 years (50% brightness reduction over that period).
Water Resistance
Rated in meters (m) or ATM (atmospheres, 1 ATM ≈ 10m). Ratings indicate static pressure resistance, not dynamic. A 30m rated watch is NOT suitable for swimming. A 100m rated watch is suitable for snorkeling. Dive operations require ISO 6425 certification, minimum 200m.
Zulu Time
NATO phonetic for UTC (Coordinated Universal Time). The standard reference time for military operations worldwide. A GMT watch displaying Zulu on the 24-hour hand is the correct tool for multi-timezone coordination.
